1953 —

Rutenberg Family 1930s

Arthur Rutenberg is a Chicago appliance dealer who has a dream, so he invests in 10 Florida lots with his father and brother. He builds three homes on spec and ARH is born. The homes sell quickly and orders follow. The company creates innovative home designs with their split-bedroom floor plan, great open views, a central kitchen, wider hallways and doors, and much more.

1955 —

Arthur’s brother Charles joins him in Florida and starts a second business, Imperial Homes, with shared ownership by the brothers. The business grows over the next several years, expanding to both Florida coasts with 10 locations operating as small locally owned builders.

1960s —

The Rutenberg label quickly becomes associated with quality and innovative building.

1969 —

Charles and Arthur are approached by an out-of-state builder looking to form a national company. The brothers merge their businesses and become two-thirds owners in the U.S. Home and Development Company.

1970 —

Arthur Rutenberg leaves U.S. Home to establish a business which focuses on developing relationships with established builders. He develops the franchise system and has two Tampa franchisees by 1978.

1970s —

U.S. Home becomes the nation’s largest homebuilder. Charles remains at the head of the business until 1976.

1980s —

The franchise program takes off and Arthur forms Arthur Rutenberg Homes Inc. as the first franchisor of home building companies. The program grows as quality builders are carefully selected to join the program.

1986 —

“Professional Builder” magazine names Arthur Rutenberg National Builder of the Year as a franchise pioneer and for his innovative home designs.

1996 —

Arthur Rutenberg is named to the Florida Housing Hall of Fame by the Florida Home Builders Association.


Arthur celebrates 50 years in the home building industry.

2008 —

ARH starts a major expansion into the Carolinas with their new Southern Plan Collection of home designs.

Today —

Our network of builders is dedicated to maintaining the vision of Arthur Rutenberg by providing quality custom homes. ARH continues to gain awards for their designs which now include about 80 designs, over 350 elevations, and a wide range of home styles to suit all tastes.
